Every successful company was once nothing more than an idea

But the road to creating a successful business is paved by lots of hard-work and investment by a multitude of people. Getting that buy-in, however, is impossible without a pitch that inspires action and confidence. That's why General Catalyst and HubSpot for Startups are teaming up this fall to host a pitch night at INBOUND 2019.

Participants will have the opportunity to compete for prizes, receive actionable feedback from an esteemed panel of judges, and get a free community pass to the INBOUND 2019 event. By applying to the pitch contest, US-based startups will also be eligible for consideration for seed-stage funding from General Catalyst.

The Details

Deadline to Apply: August 9th, 2019

Date: Wednesday, September 4th, 2019

Where: District Hall, 75 Northern Ave, Boston, MA

Agenda: The evening will kickoff with a panel highlighting our pitch competition judges, where a moderator will ask these startup experts questions straight from the founders in attendance about how to build a winning startup. The panel will be followed by a short pitch by each of the 10 finalists. Winners will then be chosen.

Winners: Two startups will be chosen as winners at the pitch night. One will be awarded the "Grand Prize" and the other will be given the "Most Promising Startup" award.

Prizes and Offers

Contest winners will be awarded a variety of prizes designed to help startups accelerate their growth including the following (prizes are subject to change):

  • All winners will be eligible for HubSpot for Startups at 90% off list price in year one, 50% in year two, and 25% ongoing.

Eligibility

Startups who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply:

  1. Funding: Early stage startups with under $2M USD in funding are eligible to enter. Companies must be incorporated. 
  2. Industry: Startups in all industries are eligible to enter, excluding the following: arms, tobacco, cannabis, adult entertainment. 
  3. Location: Startups from the U.S. are eligible to enter. Participation in person in Boston MA is required on September 4th, 2019. 
  4. Product/service: Startups are required to have a working prototype to enter competition. 
  5. Founder must be 18 years old or older at time of application. 
  6. HubSpot employees, vendors, INBOUND vendors, are not permitted to apply.

Judging Criteria

Pitch submissions will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Problem or Need: Is the problem/need real?
  • Total Addressable Market: How big is the target market?
  • Traction to date: Does the product/service have strong interest?
  • Product/Service Creation: Does the product or service effectively solve the need?
  • Monetization Strategy: Is the plan for making money feasible?
  • Competitor Differentiation: How is this product or service different than that of competitors?
  • Level of customer focus: How customer-focused is the company?
  • Team: Industry, knowledge, experience, plan for long term success?
  • Pitch Video and/or Deck: Is the pitch deck or video well planned (not production quality but content wise)?
